The Ashes
Each year 'The Ashes' are keenly contested between Bitterne Park Cricket Club and The Cavaliers.
The winners get to retain the prestigious Ashes trophy (pictured below). More importantly, they get to remind opposition players that they lost whenever they bump into them whilst out shopping, walking the dog, in the pub etc..

Please note, other Ashes competitions do exist. Check carefully before purchasing match day tickets to avoid immense disappointment. If you are not careful you may end up watching David Warner.

2008 Ashes Series

Bitterne Park retained the Ashes in convincing style in 2008. The first match on 17th May was a nine-a-side game, with BP comfortably able to contain the Cavaliers run chase.

The second fixture was on the 7th June. The Cavaliers indicated their determination to stay in the hunt by fielding a strong side featuring Ashes heroes from years gone by in the shape of Greg Walker and John McGavin.
Despite excellent batting by John Oldfield and Arvind, with a 60 plus opening partnership, BP were victorious. Key contributors were Simon Morris with 60 n.o., Pete Etherington with 5 wickets, and Dave Perks with two run-outs.

The third and final game of the series, 'The Dead Rubber', was finally played on 19th July. Cavaliers were struggling with players so late in the year, so Bitterne Park called in several guest players, including Mark Atherton's brother Paul. To even the sides up Scott Jones, Daz Beckett and William Whale played for the Cavaliers.
An excellent start by BP, with Arvind dismissed first ball. Toby Whale also impressed, taking three wickets including that of brother William.
In reply Bitterne Park were solid in the face of some fine Cavaliers bowling, with Dan particularly impressive. Jack also bowled well, and BP finished 6 runs short on 120.
2008 Series won 2 - 1
2007 Ashes Series
BP won the first match with fine performances from Toby (33 runs) Simon Morris (3 wickets), and the always reliable Extras (41 runs).
Cavaliers put in a fine all-round performance in the second test, with BPs top scorer being Will Whale with 18 runs. Their victory made the final game on 16th June all important.
Cavaliers batted excellently, with Arvind contributing 85 runs to their total of over 170. Jon Whale (34) and Toby Whale (35) ensured BP remained in the hunt, but 70 runs were still required off the last 7 overs. Daz Beckett and Simon Morris kept up with the run rate, and Daz proved the hero of the hour crashing the final ball for 4 to seal the series for BP.
